Bespoke one day workshop exploring a variety of screenprinting techniques – paper stencil, photo emulsion process, and `hand painting’ onto a silkscreen.
The group attending the session wished to produce their designs onto textiles and to create a banner for their communal workspace.

Paper stencil
This playful method allows for immediate results and a fun way to create stencils. Cut out paper shapes, laying them onto the textiles, then trapping them between the textile and printing. Where the paper is placed the ink will not penetrate, and it is a good way to explore positive and negative shapes.
Photo emulsion
This method produces a long-lasting stencil on a silkscreen, rather than the paper stencil which will deteriorate after a few prints. For this session, the attendees drew a design onto an A3 sheet of paper and these were photocopied into acetates. The silkscreens are precoating before the session to allow the coating to dry. The acetate is placed on the exposure unit and the coated screen is placed on top. The unit is closed and the ultraviolet light is activated to flood the unit with light to bake the coating. Once this is completed the scene is washed, dried and ready to use.
Hand painting onto silkscreen
Once a design concept was agreed upon by the group, each member painted a section using SpeedBall’s drawing fluid. When the fluid has dried, a thin layer of screen filler is applied to the screen and the drawing fluid is washed out thus creating a stencil.
